Farming, Forests, & Science hike!

Join us Saturday, November 1^st at 10:00am at Garrett Williamson (GW)!

We’re excited to invite you to our first farming, forests, & science hike!

This joint effort between Newtown Township Trails & Greenways Committee (T&G), Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds (CRC) and GW will be guided by Walt Cressler, a local geologist, paleobotanist, and public historian. Walt can be counted on to provide some deep-time perspective on the landscape and the rocks under foot.

What’s in store?  We’ll gather at the 1794 Barn, and then:

• Walk through GW’s scenic trails
• Swing through Urban Roots, a 26-acre CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm on GW property.
• Visit Sheep and Goats and Alpacas and Willow the horse!
• Admire beautiful spots overlooking Preston Run and CRC tree plantings.

Expect to walk around 2.5 miles total on this private property – from the historic barn, up and down some inclines through fields and woods, and back to the barn. Please wear suitable footwear and some sunscreen couldn’t hurt!

Join us for an exceptional morning on our 240-acre historic farm in Newtown Square, a unique property that blends farmland, woodlands, and spaces for learning.

We’re looking forward to walking with you!

*The Garrett Williamson property has trails meandering through open fields and meadows, riparian areas featuring a tributary to Crum Creek, and a primarily beech tree dominant forest. There are many diverse habitats and edges because the property is farmed, and has an educational garden which is visited regularly by birds.

GW was bequeathed by Elizabeth Garrett in 1910 for the support and maintenance of children and families in need who stayed in the Main Lodge during the spring, summer, and fall. It is generally closed to the public – so take advantage of this unique opportunity to hike the last large open parcel in Newtown Square.

Garrett Williamson has an Agricultural Education Division, a summer Camp Program, and an award-winning Child Care Center.
