Junior Counselor Job Description
Primary Role: To further the mission of Camp Garrett through the supervision and active care of campers. The successful Junior Summer Camp Counselor will ensure the safety and supervisions of campers, and will engage in hands-on activities with campers to promote kindness, interest, and fun at camp. The Junior Counselor will also be a strong and positive role model.
Immediate Supervisor: Camp Director
Essential Job Functions:
- Supervise campers at all times throughout the day, including transition periods and engage campers in appropriate activities throughout the day
- Working with your Senior Counselor, carry out activities designed to teach campers how to communicate effectively, build relationships, and respect diversity
- Assist your Senior Counselor in maintaining accurate attendance records, first aid logs (if needed), and open communication with camper parents/guardians
- Administer basic first aid and provide emotional support when necessary
- Enforce safety protocols and guidelines
- Create and maintain positive business and working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, families, campers, and the community
Qualifications, Skills, and Ability:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Experience working with children and young adults
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
Other Job Duties:
- Participate in camp activities, programs and meetings, including staff meetings Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with camp staff
- Assist in general maintenance and upkeep of Camp and shared facilities
- If assigned, fulfill the role of Head Junior Counselor by being a resource for Junior Counselors who need support with scheduling, games and activities, and general camp policies and procedures
- All other duties as assigned
Physical/Cognitive Requirements of the Essential Job Functions: This position requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions and take corrective actions when necessary, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals. It also requires the physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions.
