Senior Counselor Job Description

Primary Role: To further the mission of Camp Garrett through the supervision and active care of campers.  The successful Senior Summer Camp Counselor ensure the safety and supervision of campers at all times and will be responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. The Senior Counselor will also be a positive and strong role model.

Immediate Supervisor:  Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise campers at all times throughout the day, including transition periods and engage campers in appropriate activities throughout the day
  • Design and lead age appropriate activity plans for schedule blocks that not hosted by a Program Coordinator
  • Working with your Junior Summer Camp Counselor, teach campers how to communicate effectively, build relationships and respect diversity
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, first aid logs (if needed), and open communication with camper parents/guardians
    • Administer basic first aid and provide emotional support when necessary
    • Enforce safety protocols and guidelines
  • Educate campers and your Junior Counselor on identifying, resolving, and avoiding conflict
  • Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with camp staff, campers, parents and all other contacts associated with Camp Garrett
  • Create and maintain positive business and working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, families, campers, and the community

Qualifications, Skills, and Ability:                                                                                                          

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Experience working with children and young adults
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate in camp activities, programs and meetings, including staff meetings
  • Assist in general maintenance and upkeep of Camp and shared facilities
  • If assigned, fulfill the role of Head Senior Counselor by being a resource for Senior Counselors who need support with scheduling, games and activities, and general camp policies and procedures
  • All other duties as assigned

Physical/Cognitive Requirements of the Essential Job Functions: This position requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions and take corrective actions when necessary, read text and information; comprehend instructions and manuals. It also requires the physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions.
